Taj Mall owner gets reprieve in criminal case

The owner of a Nairobi mall has obtained a court order temporarily suspending a criminal case against him over allegations of forgery of a title deed for one of his shopping complexes.

Taj Mall owner Rameshchandra Govind Gorasia has accused Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko and the police of prematurely pressing charges against him without proper investigations into how he acquired a title deed for one of his shopping malls.

Justice Roselyn Aburili has temporarily stopped the criminal proceedings Mr Gorasia is facing.

Mr Gorasia insists that he acquired the land for Taj Mall legitimately in 1996, and that the title deed was issued by the commissioner of lands.

“The police instead of investigating how the lands office issued the titles for the land decided to charge Mr Gorasia. At no point have the police attempted to investigate officials at the lands office to confirm whether the title deed originated from the lands office,” Mr Gorasia said
