The government has promised to fully open up the country's economy once it achieves its target of vaccinating 10 million Kenyans against Covid-19 by the end of this year.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Abdi Aman has appealed to Kenyans to turn up for the Covid-19 vaccine so as to curb its spread and deaths.

Dr Aman further urged healthcare facilities in the country to acquire the vaccines from the government so as to ensure that all their patients are vaccinated against the virus.

"The country's economy has suffered during this pandemic. If we want the government to fully open up the economy, we must ensure that we contain the spread of the virus by rolling out vaccination campaigns at the grassroots," Dr Aman said.

The CAS spoke on Friday during the official opening of Dr Mary Robertson Glasgow Funeral Home at Nanyuki Cottage Hospital.

Enough vaccines

He said the Ministry of Health has enough vaccines to achieve the 10 million target, adding that approximately 100,000 Kenyans are vaccinated daily.

"We are moving towards our target of having 10 million Kenyans vaccinated by the end of this year. The reason as to why we are spearheading this campaign is to boost our fight against this highly infectious and dangerous virus. The vaccines have been proven to be safe and protective," Dr Aman said.

Dr Aman was the chief guest during Nanyuki Cottage Hospital's centenary celebrations.

He urged Kenyans to avoid attending political rallies so as to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

"We know we are in a campaign period but I want Kenyans to avoid attending those campaign rallies for their own safety. We need to limit the space in which the virus spreads. We should not lower our guard because we are not safe," he said.
