Senators to block projects on governors’ mansions

The devolution committee has taken issue with the proposed construction of governors' houses using public funds and vowed to block the projects.

Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, who chairs the committee, on Sunday said the Senate will not allow governors to spend hundreds of millions on official mansions.

Most counties have budgeted Sh100 million upwards for building governors’ and Assembly Speakers’ official residences.

EXPENDITURE

"I want to send a warning to governors. We will not allow you to spend hundreds of millions on houses. You cannot spend that amount of money on swimming pools and luxuries while Kenyans suffer," he said during a fundraiser in Baricho, Kirinyaga County.

The Senate has ordered the Controller of Budget, Ms Agnes Odhiambo, not to authorise any funds for building houses for governors and Speakers.

The committee directed county governments to stop all expenditure on county infrastructural projects until they get further directions from the relevant authorities.

SH100 MILLION

Nyeri has set aside Sh200 million for building a house for Governor Mutahi Kahiga while Kirinyaga budgeted Sh100million for a house for Governor Anne Waiguru. Vihiga has budgeted Sh80 million.

Uasin Gishu county government has proposed Sh100 million for the construction of the residences of Governor Jackson Mandago and his deputy.

Last month, Elgeyo Marakwet MCAs rejected Sh100 million set aside to build the governor’s residence.
