Deputy President William Ruto had directed the National Treasury to release free education funds on Monday.

He also announced that the government will, from next year, pay examination fees for all KCPE and KCSE candidates in public schools and that the money had been factored in the Budget.

“All monies owed to primary and secondary schools must be paid by Monday to ensure learning is not disrupted,” Mr Ruto said.
He said funding for primary and secondary education had been increased by 35 per cent from next year.

The Deputy President assured Kenyans that the Jubilee government would not engage in empty political rhetoric but remain focused on its election promises.

Release academic certificates

He also reiterated his directive to school heads to release academic certificates that were withheld for outstanding fees.
The DP said school heads who refused to comply would be breaking the law.

“It is an act of impunity for anyone to try and negotiate with the law,” he said.

Regarding any monies owed to schools by the leavers, the Deputy President told heads of institutions to raise the matter with the government.

He said some school leavers had to wait for years to get their certificates, a thing he said put students from poor families at a disadvantage. “Some candidates have waited for five to ten years to get their certificates because they cannot afford to clear their fees arrears which is unfair,” he said.
