More people have died in road accidents since January to October 7 than during the whole 2014.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate that 2,084 people died last year, while 2,294 have so far died this year.

The authority launched a three-month road safety campaign Thursday in a bid to curb the road carnage.

“Last year, a total of 1,017 pedestrians died on our roads. So far, this year, a total of 992 pedestrian deaths have died,” said the agency’s deputy director of corporate communications, Mr Dominic Kabiru.

He said the country normally experiences a high number of accident deaths towards the end of the year and during the Christmas period.

According to the official, a total of 519 passengers have so far died this year, compared to the 470 who lost their lives the whole of last year.

The organisation’s statistics show that the number of motorcyclists who have been killed so far stands at 315, compared to 296 who died last year.

“Pedestrians still remain the group with most fatalities. Most of the fatalities occurred in Nairobi, “ said Mr Kabiru.
