Kenya's Prime Minister should earn more than the Vice-President, the Justice Akiwumi-led tribunal on the review of MPs’ salaries has been told.

The tribunal, which was sitting in Nakuru on Wednesday and Thursday, was told that it was unfair for the PM to receive a salary lower or equal to that of VP whereas he was one of the two principals who signed the Peace Accord.

“The PM is almost equal to the President; he is the one who is managing the government and it is, therefore, not fair for him to receive a salary equal or lower than the VP,” said Bishop Jefferson Nyatika of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of East Africa.

Cut MPs’ pay

He said MPs’ salaries and allowances should be reduced to avoid the mad scramble for parliamentary seats after every five years.

Another presenter, Mr Joab Onyango, said the PM and the President should earn a similar monthly salary.

Mr Onyango also echoed sentiments by almost all the presenters before the tribunal that MPs’ salaries and allowances should be reduced.
