As President Uhuru Kenyatta succession politics rages on, a section of Kikuyu elders has promised to support the President’s idea to unite the Kieleweke and Tangatanga factions of Jubilee.

Kikuyu Council of Elders National Chairman Samuel Kimani Maigua on Thursday described President Kenyatta’s move as wise.

“As leaders, we support President Kenyatta's move to unite the two Jubilee Party factions but the Tangatanga group should understand that Mr Kenyatta is the symbol of unity and should be respected,” said Mr Maigua.

He accused the Tangatanga wing of Jubilee of behaving as if there is another President to whom they owe allegiance.

“The Deputy President William Ruto should take orders from his boss and his allies should stop their political campaign which is confusing Kenyans, particularly in Mount Kenya region,” said Mr Maigua.

MAKING FORAYS

He said President was not happy with the way the Tangatanga wing was making forays in Mount Kenya and that is why he reached out to the opposition.

Mr Maigua, however, denied claims that there were plans to install a new Mount Kenya Council of Elders in Nairobi.

“The main leaders from Gikuyu, Meru and Embu leaders are not aware of formation of a new outfit,” he said.

He revealed that members of various councils of the Gikuyu want to form one umbrella body under the banner of Gema.

“I can tell you we are are working on a new constitution,” said Mr Maigua.

He said members of Meru and Embu communities were also amalgamating their various councils.

“After the Meru and Embu communities come up with one outfit, we shall then come together and form one group to represent the people of Mount Kenya before the end of this year,” he added.

Captain Kung’u Muigai, who is the patron of National Council of Elders, said the elders will follow President Kenyatta’s directives.

He also denied there were plans to form another Mount Kenya outfit. Captain Muigai said the Kikuyu, Meru and Embu communities should unite under Mzee Phares Ruteere.

Mr Ruteere, who is secretary general of Njuri Ncheke and national chairman of Council of Elders in Kenya said they will rally behind President Kenyatta.
