Ministers grabbed golf club land: Karua

Three Cabinet ministers are among individuals who grabbed and sold off sections of the Kabete Vet Lab Golf Club in Nairobi, Gichugu MP Martha Karua told the House on Thursday.

Ms Karua dropped the bombshell in Parliament as Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojodeh successfully sought more time to prepare a statement from the request by Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah last week.

He was supposed to have presented the statement on Thursday, but said he needed more time to prepare an elaborate one after consulting the Lands ministry.

Lands minister James Orengo asked the MPs to be patient as “its history would show the mess we (the government) are in over the issue.”

“I feel offended because the people who came to see me are law-abiding citizens, so full disclosure is needed,” said Mr Orengo.

But he faced a barrage of additional questions, with Mr Konchellah saying “an association of grabbers” was behind the recent troubles at the Golf Club.

He said the club members needed protection from this “association” as it would do anything to protect the land.

Ikolomani MP Boni Khalwale tabled a letter indicating that Mr Paul Mutua, an employee of the Windsor Golf and Country Club, had been interfering with activities at Vet Lab.

Member of sports club

The club is the property of the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Livestock Development and has been the scene of fighting in the last two weeks, with two trucks burnt there last weekend.

Ms Karua said she was a member of that sports club and asked Mr Ojodeh to provide the names of the allottees, the directors of companies and the three ministers involved.

Another MP with interest, albeit indirectly, was Mr Ekwee Ethuro (ODM, Turkana Central), who attended the nearby Kabete Campus of the University of Nairobi.

He said some of the grabbed land was the property of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute and the Kenya Livestock Vaccine Development Unit.
