Kenya records 1,470 new Covid-19 cases, 25 more deaths

Kenya on Friday recorded 1,470 new Covid-19 cases, the Health ministry saying 8,072 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, raising the caseload to 68,193.

In a statement, Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the number of samples tested so far increased to 774,982.

CS Kagwe announced 25 more deaths, raising the country's number of fatalities to 1,228.

He said the number of recovered patients increased by 791 to 44,872, and that 695 of them were in the home-based care programme and 96 in hospital. 

As of Friday, 1,364 Covid-19 patients in Kenya had been hospitalised, 54 of them in ICU, while 5,726 were being treated at home.

Kenya announced its first case of the coronavirus disease on March 13, a few weeks after it was first declared in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019.

Case distribution

Of the new patients in the country, all but 73 were Kenyans.

Males numbered 986 and females 484 whereas the youngest one was two months old and the oldest 88.

Nairobi accounted for 649 of the cases, Mombasa 183, Kilifi 124, Kiambu 77, Kericho 75, Kakamega 37, Kajiado 31, Busia 30 and Uasin Gishu and Machakos 24 each.

And then came Kisii with 22, Nakuru 19, Bomet and Kisumu 17 each, Meru and Elgeyo Marakwet 15 each, Narok 13, Kirinyaga 10, Lamu and Mandera nine each, Tana River eight, and Nyeri, Taita Taveta and Bungoma six each.

Laikipia and Nandi counties following with five cases each, while Murang'a Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua and Garissa each had four new infections.

Vihiga recorded three, Kwale, Homa Bay, Makueni and Embu two each, and Nyamira, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui and Isiolo one each.
