Elders from Kochia clan in Rangwe Constituency have endorsed Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga’s gubernatorial bid.

Ms Wanga’s endorsement by the Kochia clan is unique considering that she hails from Kisumu County. She was born in Wang’aya in Muhoroni Constituency, but got married in Kochia.

Women have traditionally found it difficult to contest for elective seats away from their places of birth.

Kochia elders have, however, said they are fighting male chauvinism by backing Ms Wanga.

The senior citizens, who are also members of the Luo Council of Elders, endorsed the Woman Rep during an event that was witnessed by thousands of residents at Ligisa Secondary School.

In attendance were more than 30 members of county assembly, including Julius Gaya (Central Karachuonyo), Maurice Ogwang’ (Kendu Bay Town) Walter Muok (Kanyadoto), and Nicholas Owaka (Kanyamwa Kosewe).

Others were nominated MCAs Sophie Salim and Moniflorita Ondiek.

Shield and spear

Mr Odul Kabaraka, the Luo Council of Elders chairman in Kochia Ward, gave Ms Wanga a ceremonial shield and spear.

Ms Wanga pledged to equip health facilities, fight corruption in the county government, and establish a pineapple factory in Kochia, if elected.

The race to succeed Mr Awiti has attracted at least eight aspirants, including Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, Suba South MP John Mbadi, former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers Secretary General Akelo Misori and businessman Luis Ogingo.
