Isiolo marks anti-FGM Day

After years of seeking a solution to the fight against female gender mutilation (FGM), the youth in Isiolo County finally have something to smile about.

This is after the Youth Anti-FGM Network - Isiolo Chapter was launched on a day that marked the International Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation Day held Thursday at Police grounds in Isiolo County.

During the event, Youth anti-FGM Network – Kenya officially presented a communique to the government, calling for, among other things a representation in then anti-FGM board.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Administrative Secretary, Ministry of Public Service and Gender Ms Rachel Shebesh, assured the youth that as the current FGM board term comes to an end, the government will ensure the youth involved in anti-FGM campaigns are included.

“In the next board, we will ensure there is a representative of the youth,” she said.

Members of the Youth anti-FGM Network will be tasked with mobilising their colleagues and conducting campaigns against FGM in the county. Isiolo County currently ranks among top FGM hotspots in the country.

Also present at the event were United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in Kenya, Dr. Ademola Olajide, and Mrs. Agnes Pareiyo, chairperson of anti-FGM board.
