Five arrested over stolen motorcycles worth Sh14m in Kitengela

Police in Kitengela have arrested five suspects and recovered stolen motorcycles and accessories worth Sh14.4 million hidden in a go-down at Kitengela’s Chuna estate.

The brand new 76 motorcycles worth Sh7.4 million and motor cycle spare parts worth Sh7 million belonging to Nairobi Machinery Company Limited, dealers in motorcycles and accessories were stolen on Nov 1, 2013 at night at the company’s Isinya branch.

According to Nairobi Machinery Company Limited official, Mose Kahukia, unknown persons broke into the company assembling unit at Isinya town and managed to steal all 76 motorcycles and spare parts.

“Unknown persons broke into our assembly plant at Isinya town and made away with 76 motorcycles and spare parts valued at Sh7 million,” said Mr Kahukia.

Police began investigations but it was not until Saturday when some members of public tipped the police of two people who were selling brand new motorcycles at very low prices.

“We were informed by members of public that some motorcycles were being sold at a throw away prices at Chuna and our investigations led us to a go down in Chuna where the materials were found,” said a Kitengela police officer who is not authorised to speak to the media.

He said they arrested the two suspects and upon interrogation they disclosed where the consignment had been hidden in a go-down at Chuna Estate in Kitengela.
Police moved into the go-down and recovered 70 motorcycles and spare parts.

Speaking to the Nation on phone, Isinya OCPD Edward Wafula said police had arrested five suspects so far, four men and a woman.

He said the suspects are believed to belong to a motorcycle theft syndicate that has been terrorising dealers in the past few months.

“We are determined to fight this kind of crime and all involved must face the law,” said the area OCPD.
