Mount Kenya University is set to build a state of the art anatomy laboratory to supplement the Thika Level V Hospital facility. The new laboratory, according to MKU Board Chairman Simon Gicharu, will help ease the congestion at the Thika Level 5 Hospital and help both the hospital staff and students of medicine to advance their research.

The university board said it is working towards the establishment of a stand-alone medical facility for use by students of the College of Health Sciences.

To address the increased demand for affordable, high standards hostels, the board has approved the construction of Shs 1 billion ultra-modern hostel facility in Thika Town.

The MKU board chairman said the university has strived to contribute in activities that are aimed at strengthening the East Africa Community, especially on region-based research and community outreach programmes within the region.

"As a board we are partnering with universities across the region to develop programs and projects that will contribute to regional quality addition in the education sector. We are also developing joint programmes that shall address mental health among theyouth and the elderly so that we can reduce or completely eradicate suicide, murders, destruction of property that includes burning of schools," he said.

According to Mr Gicharu, MKU's Equip Africa Institute will continue to cater for community needs in technical skills and knowledge among the youth.

At the same time Gicharu said the university has awarded Ms Milly Nafula Barasa a full scholarship to pursue medicine. The student, who scored an  A minus 13 years ago, failed to join university to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor 13 years ago.

The board chairman said the scholarship will enable the student to finally achieve her dreams.

"I was really touched when I saw her story on TV. I asked myself how can we as Kenyans allow her to stay at home for so many years just because she can't afford to join university. We shall give her a scholarship to fulfill her lifetime dream," Mr Gicharu said.
