All Standard One pupils will be issued with tablets by June, Education PS Belio Kipsang’ has said.

Dr Kipsang’ said the digital literacy programme recently launched in 150 primary schools would be fully rolled out this year.

The project is a pledge made by the Jubilee alliance during the 2013 campaigns.

“We are devoted to ensuring that the remaining over 22,000 primary schools are issued with the devices by June,” he said in a speech read on his behalf by Director-General of Education Leah Rotich.

Ms Rotich added that the ministry was working with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to realign the syllabus with the country’s socioeconomic and technological needs.

She said the new curriculum would incorporate talent and development studies as opposed to the current focus on grades.

She said the government had allocated Sh32 billion for the free day secondary education programme, to benefit over 2.6 million students.

“Each student will receive Sh12,000 to relieve Kenyan parents of the burden of paying school fees,” she said.
