Covid-19: Kenya's cases rise by 947 to nearly 49,000

Kenya recorded another high of 947 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday following testing of 6,862 samples for the virus in the last 24 hours.
In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe said this raised the number of infections declared in Kenya, since the first one on March 123, to 48,790, and the total number of samples tested for the virus so far to 653,239.
CS Kagwe also announced that 12 more patients had succumbed to the disease, which raised the country's death toll to 896.
The total number of recovered patients, he said, rose 455 to 33,876, with 343 of those people having been in the home-based care programme and 112 in hospital.
The number of patients in intensive care units across the country rose by two, from the 20 reported on Friday.
The ministry also reported that 62 patients were on supplementary oxygen and 16 in high dependency units, and that as of October 24, a total of 1,167 patients had been admitted to health facilities across the country while 3,464 were under home-based care.
Case distribution
The youngest of the new patients was a year old and the oldest 96 whereas all but 23 of them were Kenyans. Males numbered 595 and females 352.
In terms of case distribution by country, Uasin Gishu led with 181 news infections and was followed by Nairobi with 154, Nakuru with 146, Kakamega with 46 and Mombasa and Kisumu with 37 each.
And then came Kiambu and Kericho with 30 new cases each, Busia 28, Turkana 27, Laikipia 24, Trans Nzoia 21, Migori 20, Kisii 18, Meru 17, West Pokot 15, Marsabit 14, Bungoma 13 and Murang'a 11.
Vihiga County accounted for 10 of the 947 new cases, Siaya and Bomet nine each, Nandi eight, Elgeyo Marakwet seven, Baringo six, Kajiado, Kitui and Isiolo five each, Wajir three, Machakos, Kilifi, Narok, Tharaka Nithi and Samburu two each and Nyeri one.
