Covid-19: Kenya records 30,120 cases, nearly 700 more recoveries

  • The number of recoveries rose significantly, by 686 to hit 16,656, with the trend of more home recoveries persisting. A total of 626 of those discharged were under home-based care and 60 at health facilities.

Kenya crossed the 30,000 mark of coronavirus cases on Sunday after the Health ministry announced that 271 more people had tested positive in the last 24 hours.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country, which announced its first one on March 13, therefore reached 30,120 on August 16.

The number of recoveries also rose significantly, by 686 to hit 16,656, with the trend of more home recoveries persisting. A total of 626 of those discharged were under home-based care and 60 at health facilities.

The ministry further reported two more deaths in the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 474.

With the testing of 3,746 samples in the last 24 hours, the total number of samples tested in the country rose to 391,416.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said majority of the new patients - 268 - were Kenyans and the rest foreigners and that the youngest was eight months old and the oldest 86, while 170 were male and 101 female.

Case distribution

Nairobi accounted for the highest number of new cases among counties with 126 and then came Busia with 14, Kirinyaga with 13, Machakos and Narok with 12 each, Kiambu with 11 and Kajiado, Kitui and Nakuru with 10 each.

Kisumu, Samburu and Garissa each accounted for eight, Mombasa six, Nyeri and Trans Nzoia  four each, Taita Taveta and Lamu three ach, Kakamega and Kisii two each and Bungoma, Kilifi, Makueni, Murang’a and Siaya one each.

In the capital city, Westlands had 16 new patients, Kamukunji 14, Ruaraka 11, Kasarani, Lang’ata and Roysambu nine each,  Embakasi West and Starehe seven each, Dagoretti South, Embakasi East and Makadara six each, Dagoretti North, Embakasi South and Kibra five each, Embakasi Central and Embakasi North four each and Mathare three.

Mombasa's cases were recorded in Mvita which had four and in Jomvu and Kisauni which had one each.

In Kisumu, Muhoroni and Nyando each had three new patients, while Kisumu West had two, while in Machakos, Machakos Town recorded seven, Athi River three, and Kangundo and Yatta one each. 

In Kiambu, Kabete and Ruiru each had four cases and Kiambaa, Kiambu Town and Kikuyu one each, while in all of Kajiado’s 10 cases were in Kajiado North.
