Lessons from my mother
What you need to know:
- Nothing should ever take priority over your family or spending time with your kids
Wahu Kagwi, award winning singer/songwriter. Wahu is a mother of one daughter aged six and a half
SM: What was your mother’s parenting style?
Wahu: Mum was strict, but she was not unapproachable and I could go to her when I needed to. But yes, she used her slipper on me on many occasions.
SM: Did you take after her? What is your parenting style?
Wahu: I’m very hands-on with my daughter. I’m her biggest fan, her disciplinarian, her prayer warrior and her guide in these very critical stages of her journey on earth.
SM: Which were the most valuable lessons on parenting from your mom?
Wahu: I learnt that a mother’s love knows no limits. I understand how she feels about me when I look at how I feel about my daughter.
I also learnt that if you spare the rod, you spoil the child that you love so much, but discipline should be done in love and without anger.
SM: What discipline incident do you remember?
Wahu: One time my little cousin ate some sugar, and we were both punished - my cousin for eating the sugar, and me for not stopping her, given that I was the older one. It taught me responsibility and leadership.
SM: Your thoughts on motherhood?
Wahu: Nothing should ever take priority over your family or spending time with your kids. Being their first teacher, their mentor, their protector and encourager is the greatest investment you as a mum can ever make.
(Wahu’s mother, Mrs. Lucy Kagwi, is a retired banker)
