What you need to know:

  • You have to be meticulous to avoid running into headwinds in future.
  • Lastly, plan well so that you secure your future after formal employment without jeopardising your current job

I work in the communication industry, and I believe that one day I will start my own firm. It is something I have been thinking about for a while now, and I am determined to make it happen.

How can I develop my own unique brand while working for my employer without antagonising him or seeming too ambitious?

You will not be employed forever. At one stage in your career, you will have to step out and engage in other income generating activities.

Since you are already gaining experience at the moment, you have an advantage which will be useful when you venture into self-employment.

That said, it can be challenging to give your current employer the best while at the same time planning to start a similar business.

You have to be meticulous to avoid running into headwinds in future. You have a responsibility to deliver on your current objectives and responsibilities at work. Get your employment contract and reread the clause on devotion to your employer.

Can you make plans and then develop your brand without stealing your employer’s time and assets? You must be careful not to utilise company resources for your own personal benefits.

Additionally, make sure you don’t develop a brand that will compete directly with your employer, as this will precipitate conflict of interest.
Is your potential client base similar to that of your current employer?

How will you ensure that your loyalty is not compromised? Your network is your net worth. Therefore, your current job gives you an opportunity to network and meet potential clients and partners for your business.

Based on the capital required, draw a plan and map out the date or month you plan to start your business.

There is comfort in relying on a monthly income, so you must figure out how you will continue paying your bills before your business becomes profitable.
Lastly, plan well so that you secure your future after formal employment without jeopardising your current job. Be careful not to suffer burnout as you juggle your job and plan for your business.

“The man who starts out simply with the idea of getting rich won’t succeed, you must have a larger ambition,”– John D Rockefeller.
