Police in Eldoret on Thursday nabbed more than 100 boxes of contraband alcohol with a street value of Sh1 million.

The consignment was seized on Eldoret-Ziwa road in the outskirts of Eldoret town following a tip-off from members of the public.

Turbo sub-county police boss Edward Masibo said the suspected contraband alcohol was found in a vehicle whose driver is already in police custody and will be arraigned.

Police suspect the alcohol is from one of the neighboring countries.

Mr Masibo said authorities will continue to flush out unscrupulous traders seeking to evade paying taxes and flooding the market with contraband goods.

“We have contacted Kenya Revenue Authority and other relevant authorities to come and check the nabbed liquor,” Mr Masibo said.

Uasin Gishu County Executive for Trade Julius Ruto said the seized alcohol did not have relevant approvals.

He cautioned individuals involved in the smuggling of sub-standard goods into the country that the government will not allow them to operate.

“Such acts amount to sabotage and economic crime and as a county government we will not relent until all those involved are arrested and prosecuted,” Mr Ruto said.
