Officials of a gender-based violence organisation have rescued a 26-year-old woman who was allegedly attacked by her husband for failing to cook supper.

The incident happened on Monday at Crescent area in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kayaba slums.

The victim, Ms Jackline Kageni, a mother of three children, was reportedly battered by her husband, Mr Gibson Kayu, 38.

According to Ms Kageni, trouble started after her husband gave her Sh100 to buy supper. She insisted that the money was not enough to buy food for the family of five people, adding that she knew her husband had more money but instead went to buy shoes. She said her husband later came home drunk.

On his part, Mr Kayu told the Nation that he was tired after the day’s work. He works as a loader at a flour manufacturing company in the Industrial Area.

“I left the house moments after my wife had left at around 6.30am without even preparing breakfast. At work, where I offload sacks of maize, I did not take lunch. In the evening, I wanted to eat ‘heavy supper’. With the money I had given her to buy eggs, my wife diverted it to settling a debt she had for a new dress,’’ Mr Kayu said.

The irate husband hit his wife several times after she allegedly attacked him using a sufuria.

Called for help

Other women from the neighbourhood responded after the expectant woman called for help. Mr Kayu met the wrath of dozens of women who confronted and beat him up.

The man complained of pain in the head and ribs following the beating.

Starehe Deputy County Commissioner Michael Aswani Were condemned the incident and advised Mukuru residents to settle family disputes through the Nyumba Kumi committee, slum chairman, chiefs and their assistants as well as religious leaders.

Speaking on the phone from his office, Mr Were said domestic violence is a crime punishable in law.

“Do not take matters into your own hands because we will come for you since that is a criminal act,’’ he said.

He said the suspect will be arrested and charged in court once the woman is issued with a police P3 Form and treated.
