Murang'a man shoots at parents in family dispute

Muranga County police boss Mohammed Farah said officers are searching for the suspect.

A couple in Murang’a is living in fear after their son, a policeman, apparently shot at them in a family dispute.

Harrison Maina and Christine Muthoni said bullets from a firearm used by the suspect missed them by a whisker and hit trees in the compound.

According to the family their son arrived unannounced at their Matithi, Kiharu home on Sunday.

"I was tending the farm when I heard some noise in the bush. I then saw my stepson with a firearm aimed at me and his father," said Ms Muthoni.

Two gunshots followed which Mr Maina said hit nearby trees after they dived for cover.

"We were very frightened, we thought we had died after the two gun shots. I have not felt like that before," Mr Maina said.

They said the man fled from the scene in a boda boda.

Muranga County police boss Mohammed Farah said officers are searching for the man, who is based in Siaya for questioning over the incidence.

"We are on the matter, we visited the scene on Sunday but we did not collect any spent cartridges," Mr Farah said.

A witness told Nation that he heard two gunshots and saw the alleged assailant flee on a boda boda with a sack on his shoulders.

Mr Maina said disputes with his 23-year-old son started after he married a second wife.

"We have been living in fear after he vowed he would take away our lives. I ask the government to fast-track the investigations before its too late," he said.

Mr Farah said the family is rocked in a land inheritance dispute with the first wife’s children accusing Mr Maina of favouring those of Ms Muthoni.
