ODM's Abdulswamad Nassir wins Mombasa governor race
The electoral commission has officially declared Abdulswamad Nassir (ODM) the winner of the Mombasa governor race with 119,083 votes.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Mombasa Independent, Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer Swalha Yusuf.
Mr Hassan Omar of UDA was second with 98,105.
Other candidates were Awiti Bollo Hezron (875), William Kingi (712), Shafi Makazi (633), Said Abdallalla (338) and Daniel Kitsao (402).
Mr Nassir thanked his supporters for turnout which ensured ODM retained the seat held by Governor Hassan Joho who is serving his second and final term.
“We had the strategies that won over those of our competitors. But I am the first to now extend an olive branch so that we work for the betterment of Mombasa,” Mr Nassir said.
“It is laughable that I was branded a Joho project. Let this be a lesson to future generations that in the coast humility is key in this politics,” he added.
Mr Joho said by winning 23 of the county’s 30 wards and five of the county’s six constituencies, ODM had proved critics wrong adding Mombasa was still the party’s stronghold.
Dr Kingi, Mr Joho’s deputy, earlier conceded defeat.
"I would also like to extend my gratitude to all those who were in the race for a peaceful campaign period defined by the competition of ideas. I look forward to joining hands with the victors to build a prosperous Mombasa for all," he said.
