Meru County Deputy Governor Raphael Muriungi has assured residents of Igembe South Sub-County that the fire engine that was taken from Maua Town to Meru will soon be returned.

It will help in fighting the increasing fire disasters in the area, he has said.

Speaking on phone with the Daily Nation, Mr Muriungi said that the Meru County government was taking the issue of fire disasters in Igembe South seriously.

This came a day after 20 houses were razed down by fire in Kanuni Location of Igembe South.

The affected families are now spending nights in the cold in addition to having lost all their property to the fire.

Mr Muriungi said that he had already visited the scene of the fire and met with the victims and that he had assured them that their problems would be addressed.

He said that the fire engine belonged to Maua and that it was only taken to Meru Town after it broke down.

He added that he was planning to meet the county engineers who will assess the mechanical problems of the fire engine so that it could be repaired as soon as possible and be taken back to Maua to help fight fire disasters in the area.

“The fire engine undoubtedly belongs to Maua people as it was donated to them and the money to clear it at the port came from Igembe South Constituency development fund.

This means that it is fully theirs and after the repairs, it will be taken back to Maua,” he said.

On his side, Kanuni Ward County representative Mr Safari Ntalala accused the county government of delays in taking the fire engine to Maua Town.

He said that it was unfortunate that the victims had to lose property worth about Sh4million barely two weeks after a similar incident took place in Kimongoro, a shopping centre neighbouring Kanuni.
