A man was on Friday lynched by residents of Kimicha village in Kirinyaga County over suspicion of livestock theft.
The suspect had attempted to flee from the angry mob but they cornered and set him ablaze with his motorcycle.
Police arrived shortly after the incident and took the victim's charred remains to Kerugoya Referral Hospital mortuary.
The residents accused the suspect of being part of a well organised gang that has been stealing their cows and goats before selling them to unscrupulous butchers outside the region.
"We have been losing our livestock to these criminals," said one eyewitness.
"We have incurred heavy losses due to constant theft of our animals," said another area resident by the name Misheck Mburu.
According to the residents, the livestock thieves usually raid homesteads at night and drive the livestock away.
Police at the scene asked the residents to desist from taking the law into their hands.
They said investigations into the incident have commenced, warning that those found guilty will be arrested and prosecuted.
