Mr Lawrence Muchiri, 52, went missing on Tuesday afternoon but a few hours later, his body was found lying 500 metres from his home.

Kirinyaga East Sub-county deputy police boss Patrick Nyaanga said: “We want to establish whether he was killed or if it was a suicide case.”

According to Nyaanga, prior to his disappearance, the trader had quarreled with his wife.

Suicide note

"The information we have received from relatives is that the trader picked up a quarrel with his wife over unknown reasons but later his lifeless body, which was badly burnt, was found near his home. We also recovered a suicide note suspected to have been written by the victim," said Mr Nyaanga.

"We are seeking to establish whether the trader killed himself or was murdered and a fake suicide note authored as a cover up," he added.

Area residents have appealed to the police to get to the bottom of the matter even as the police asked the residents to volunteer any information which can help in their investigations.

The body of the deceased was taken to Kibugi funeral home in  Kutus for post-mortem examination.
