Team set up to spearhead drive to flush out illegal immigrants from Isiolo

Security officers in Isiolo have set up a team to spearhead an operation to flush out illegal immigrants and arrest human traffickers in the county.

At the same time, Isiolo Central Deputy County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto has issued a stern warning to human traffickers involved in the cross border human trade.

Mr Rutto warned the individuals engaging in the illegal business that they will soon be brought to book.

Speaking to the Nation, Mr Rutto said human trafficking has overburdened the government with 450 prisoners serving their jail terms at the Isiolo GK Prison.

Of the 450 illegal immigrants, he said, 300 were Ethiopians arrested within Isiolo County.

The Isiolo prison has a capacity of 150 inmates.

The administrator blamed police officers manning 10 barriers from Moyale to Isiolo for allowing the free transit of the illegal immigrants.

He called for an overhaul and reshuffle of security officers manning the security barriers on the 500km highway.

Last month, more than 80 Ethiopians were repatriated back to their country after finishing their jail terms.

Most of the foreigners have been arrested while on their way to Nairobi.

More than 120 Ethiopians have been arrested and arraigned in court in Meru County in the last one month.
