Isiolo governor hires chopper to evacuate students from flooded areas

Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo hired a chopper to evacuate about 100 students from Cherab area which had been cut off by floods owing to the current rains pounding the area.
The students from various schools in Wajir, Isiolo, Meru and Garissa counties were not able to report back to school last week for the second term after floods destroyed a section of roads linking Baasa to Merti Sub-County.
The students were evacuated to Merti and Isiolo town to enable them report back to school.
HOUSES DESTROYED
In a statement, Mr Doyo noted that more than 300 houses were destroyed and a number of livestock swept away by floods.
"The governor helped to evacuate students and vulnerable people including women and children to safer grounds where they can access means of transport," the statement adds.
He said that trucks carrying food items to the vast region of Bassa and Cherab were stuck and could not deliver the food to the affected families.
However, advised locals to be cautious when crossing seasonal rivers and appealed to those living along swampy areas to relocate to avert further disaster.
