Police in Isiolo have recovered the body of a driver who was swept away by floods along the Kinna-Garbatulla road following a heavy downpour more than a week ago.

Hussein Kesane was transporting miraa from Maua in Meru towards Garissa and was in the company of Ibrahim Billow when his vehicle was swept away by  raging waters about a kilometre to Garbatulla town.

He was swept away while trying to swim to safety after the vehicle got stuck in a flooded canal.

His body was found at Benane near the Isiolo-Garissa border about 20km from the scene of the incident after nine days of extensive search by security personnel, an administration team and members of the public.

“Our officers and the administration team retrieved the decomposing body after more than a week-long search,” said Garbatulla Police Commander Alloys Orioki.

Mr Orioki asked motorists plying the stretch, where floods often occur during rainy seasons, to exercise utmost caution and avoid crossing raging waters to prevent loss of lives and destruction of property.

“Drivers should mind their safety more than the commodities they transport,” the police boss said.
