A total system audit of all Coffee Co-operative Societies and Murang’a Farmers Co-operative Union is underway to determine what is ailing the coffee sub-sector in Murang’a County.

The system audit also aims at making sure that there is reduction of wastage, proper governance structures are put in place at the factory and society levels to guarantee that the farmer gains maximum benefits from his coffee.

Murang’a County governor Mwangi Wa Iria Tuesday told the Nation that the systems are being audited all the way from the factory to marketing level in partnership with a research and management firm Deloitte and Touche.

“It is a total system audit; we want to understand what has been ailing the coffee sector in Murang’a County all the way from the factory to the market,” said Mr Wa Iria.

The county has 145 coffee factories with 35 Coffee Co-operative Societies all under the umbrella of Murang’a Farmers’ Co-operative Union and has been having challenges within their structures and systems.

Once the auditors complete their work in the next few months, their report will be tabled in the County Assembly for discussion.

The governor said through the auditor’s report they will be able to come up with recommendations which will give them the direction to take in order to improve the coffee sector in the county.
