The popularity of Airtel Money has grown in the past couple of months, signalling an interesting year in the mobile money space in Kenya. Airtel says more Kenyans are now using Airtel Money in their day-to-day mobile money transactions, and there are several reasons behind this trend. Here are five:

1. Sending money for free: Airtel Money customers enjoy zero transaction cost when sending money within Airtel network. Kenyans have come to appreciate the savings they make, enabling them to stretch that elusive shilling to give them more.

3. Convenience: Customers can fund their Airtel Money wallets from their bank accounts or visit one of the thousands of Airtel Money agents across the country. This has contributed to the adoption of Airtel Money.

4. Airtel Money extra benefit: In addition to sending money for free, customers get 25 percent extra airtime or data when they buy airtime or data bundles using Airtel Money. Coupled with the fact that Airtel’s voice and data products are competitively priced, it gives anyone with an Airtel line the edge over anyone with any other network.

Mobile phone users are indeed responding. Recent data from the Communications Authority show that Airtel has doubled its share of the voice market to 32.2 percent as of December 2022, from 13.5 percent five years ago. Its mobile data usage has registered a similar trend, from a market share of 18.5 percent five years ago to 27.9 percent in December 2022.

5. Ability to transact across all Paybills and Tills: Airtel Money customers can make direct mobile money payments to any merchant Till number and Paybill across different mobile operators and banks, boosting the adoption and convenience of making cashless payments.
