Lawrence Juma put up a sterling performance as Sofapaka beat Wazito 2-1 in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League match at Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium in Wundanyi on Wednesday.

Sofapaka were 1-0 up at half time through Juma's strike with Wazito defender Maurice Owino scoring an own goal late on to hand Batoto ba Mungu the three points.

The game started 30 minutes as Wazito protested the lack of key equipment in the ambulance that the hosts had provided.

When the match finally kicked-off, it was Wazito who looked the better side, pinning their opponents into their territory in the early exchanges.

They missed a golden chance to take the lead in the 15th minutes when Musa Masika outpaced two Sofapaka defenders but his ground shot hit side post.

A minute later, the home team almost scored when Titus Achesa sent a fine cross but Sebastine Ikekhai's header went wide.

Sofapaka's got the breakthrough against the run of play on 42 minutes when Joseph Waithira released Juma, who made no mistake from close range.

Former Sofapaka man Elli Asieche levelled for the visitors on 70 minutes with a brillaint strike, but Maurice Owino turned Hansel Ochieng's drive into his own net 11 minutes later.

Sofapaka assistant coach David Ouma, who was standing in for head coach Ken Odhiambo who is away to attend to personal matters, said the team has many young, talented and determined players who are willing to learn.

"This is a young team which is still developing cohesion. We've a long way to go and we've not reached the level we would want to be," he said.

His Wazito counterpart Francis Kimanzi said his players missed a number of scoring chances.
