Peter Mungai's Olympics medal dream shattered

What you need to know:

  • Mungai’s dream ended when he went down 0-3 (27-30, 27-30 and 26-30) to the dominant 19-year-old Cuban.
  • Mungai, 35, had two days ago pounded his way to the quarterfinal after he outclassed Lyv Bin of China in a split decision in their boxing contest.

Kenya’s light flyweight boxer Peter Mungai on Wednesday failed in his quest to reach the medal bracket at the Rio Olympics when he lost to World champion Joahnys Argilagos of Cuba in the quarter-finals.

Mungai’s dream ended when he went down 3-0 (27-30, 27-30 and 26-30) to the dominant 19-year-old Cuban.

Mungai, 35, had two days ago pounded his way to the quarterfinal after he outclassed Lyv Bin of China in a split decision in their boxing contest.

Another Kenyan boxer, Benson Gicharu, was due to exchange with Tsendbaatar Erdenebat from Mongolia in the first round of their bantamweight bout later at 11.45pm on Wednesday.

Gicharu, who won a silver medal in flyweight at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games before winning bronze in bantamweight at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, already knows the level of determination, hunger and skill required to gain qualification for the next stage, having represented Kenya at the 2012 London Olympics. He failed to go past the first round, losing to Egyptian Hesham Abdelaal.

The other Kenyan boxer in Rio, Rayton Okwiri, will face Moroccan Rabii Mohammed for a place in the quarterfinal of their welterweight contest on Friday at 12.30am.

Okwiri, 30, pulled the biggest upset of the boxing competition on Sunday when he stunned Russia's London 2012 bronze medallist Andrei Zamkovoi on a split decision in their welterweight contest.

The Kenyan boxers are in pursuit of the country's first medals since the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games
