WFP wins 2020 Nobel Peace Prize

David Beasley, the head of the World Food Programme (WFP).

The United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) has won the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger.

The agency emerged a winner from a pool of favourites including the World Health Organization (WHO), activist Greta Thunberg, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the leaders of the revolution in Sudan.

WFP head David Beasley told The Associated Press that he was left speechless by news of the award.

“I think this is the first time in my life I've been without words. I was just so shocked and surprised," he told the AP from Niger on Friday, after the news agency gave him the news.

This is the 101st time the award has been handed out. 107 people and 27 organisations have been honoured in the past.
