“Five people died on the spot while two others passed away while receiving treatment at Kimilili Sub-County Hospital,” Bungoma County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim told journalists.
STATE OF ROAD
The matatu driver died on the spot while his lorry counterpart was slightly injured.
Witnesses said the speeding matatu was attempting to avoid a pothole when it hit the oncoming lorry.
Among the dead was a woman and her daughter heading to school for the opening of term.
The girl died instantly while her mother succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.
The county chief said the road was in a bad condition, adding that traffic department officers were compiling a report on the tragedy.
EXCESS PASSENGERS
“The state of the road could be one of the reasons for the fatal accident. However, let us wait for the police report,” Mr Maalim said.
He called on drivers, especially public service vehicles, to be careful when using the road.
He also warned against carrying excess passengers.
The bodies were taken to Kimilili and Bungoma hospital mortuaries.
