Some 905 health workers have so far contracted Covid-19 as the government works to contain infection rates among the front-line personnel.

However, Public health department head Susan Mutua said the majority of those who have contracted the disease have recovered.

“As of Wednesday, 905 healthcare workers had turned positive for Covid-19. We must be at the frontline to protect ourselves from this virus,” Ms Mutua told over 200 health workers in Tudor, Mombasa.

Ms Mutua said the government does not want to lose its frontline workforce to the disease. She added most cases are now community based.

The official spoke during the launch of a Sh200 million African Medical and Research Foundation’s (Amref) training for health workers and community health volunteers (CHV’s) in 10 counties.

The training will cover infection protection and behaviour change on Covid-19.

The government and Amref are targeting health workers from 10 counties severely affected by the pandemic including Mombasa, Kwale, Nairobi, Meru, Embu, Kisii, Homabay, Migori, Siaya and Kakamega .

Amref’s country director, Mr Martin Muchangi, stressed the importance of embracing community health in the counties’ fight against the disease.
