The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) has unveiled a new board. The announcement came after a competitive virtual election held on November 20, where Dr Jane Thuo was declared the winner of the chairperson position.

This was the first time in the 38-year history of AMWIK that elections have been held virtually.

AMWIK is a national, independent, non-profit membership organisation for media women. It envisions a society in which the media embraces and promotes gender equity to improve the lives of women and children for the full enjoyment of their human rights.

“We are adapting to trends, mostly propelled by the pandemic. The turnout was outstanding, and we are grateful to the members for their support in taking part in the process to decide on their future,” stated the elections committee chair, Jane Gitau.

AMWIK executive director Judie Kaberia lauded all the aspirants and urged all stakeholders to join efforts and forge ahead.

Dr Thuo will head the six-member board deputised by Rachel Ombaka. Venter Nkatha is the new board treasurer, while members are Jane Godia, Lilian Anyango and Cylia Kathambi.

Dr Thuo, who served as the AMWIK director from 2007 to 2013, is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.  Her deputy, Ms Ombaka, is a seasoned editor, media trainer and public speaker.

The new board will serve from 2021 to 2023.
