Mass action after polls not banned

Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe has clarified there is no ban to demonstrations after elections.

He says that the issue was misreported and facts misinterpreted.

Kiraithe clarified that the government did not criminalise mass action but mass violence.

“There is a big difference between demonstration, picketing, protest and mass violence. Nobody has criminalised mass action but we are just preparing for people who will commit crime in the name of mass action.” – Eric Kiraithe.

Mr Kiraithe has also said the government has put in place measures to ensure elections are held on August 8 as planned.

Maina Njenga joins Kanu

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has officially joined Kanu.

Mr Njenga has been welcomed by Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi and Secretary-General Nick Salat at the party’s headquarters.

Njenga had earlier sued IEBC and the Jubilee after the refused to accept his nomination papers for the Laikipia senatorial seat.

Uhuru claims Raila at centre of 2007 chaos

President Uhuru Kenyatta has accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of being at the centre of the 2007/8 post-election violence.

"Yeye ndiye aliwasha moto (He is the one who lit the fire)." – President Kenyatta

He was speaking today during a tour of the Gusii region.

President says the Abagusii were among communities that were affected by the violence.

“Raila was at the centre of the 2007 chaos in which Kenyans fought but he blamed it on Ruto." – President Kenyatta

The President called for national reconciliation.

Gunga Mwinga defects Devolution Party

Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga defects from Kadu Asili to Devolution Party of Kenya.

The MP is the Coast Parliamentary Group chairman.

He is the chairman and leader of Devolution Party.

He says Kadu Asili has lost direction and is now "rudderless and in auto-pilot".

IEBC terminates system supply tender

IEBC has terminated the tender for the supply, installation and commissioning of the Kenya Integrated Electoral Management System (Kiems).

The system was to integrate voter register and identification and results transmission.

The tender was worth Sh3 billion.

IEBC says the scope of technology requirements has changed following recent conclusion of mass voter listing.

Therefore, there would be no value for money to retain the voter registration component in Kiems, the commission says.

Uhuru day two tour of Gusii

President Uhuru Kenyatta is today visiting Kisii County on the second day of his tour of Gusii region.

The visit is the culmination of a two-day tour.

His visit is part of Jubilee’s charm offensive to woo the region, which overwhelmingly voted for ODM in 2013.

Today, the head of State will start by launching the tarmacking of the Kebuko-Nyangusu-Nyamache-Nyacheki road.

He will then attend a leaders’ meeting in Nyamache to launch the Nyanturago at the Musa Nyandusi Stadium.

President Kenyatta will later launch the construction of the Omoringamu-Kenyenya-Ibencho-Nyamasege-Ogembo-Motoni-Riongoro road.

He will then conclude the day’s programme with a public rally at the Gusii Stadium.

IEBC, EACC issue rules on integrity

The IEBC together with the anti-corruption commission will today decide on who can be barred from running for elective seats over integrity issues.

The two agencies will issue guidelines on who among them has the authority to stop politicians with corruption cases from vying.

“We have presented the regulations to guide nominations…Anyone who will be caught in this will be free to come to the commission.” – Ms Roselyn Akombe, IEBC Commissioner.

Chebukati, Boinnet address media

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, Police IG Joseph Boinnet and Chief Justice David Maraga will this morning address a meeting on election preparedness.

The meeting will be held at the Ufungamano House.

It has been organised by the Multi Sectoral Forum, which brings together the Inter Religious Council of Kenya.

Mr Kiraithe will also talk about security.
