Tension high in Bura as police shoot dead NYS serviceman

  • The NYS officers allegedly beat up and injured a police officer who was later rushed Malindi Hospital for treatment.

  • After the killing of their colleague, the NYS servicemen re-grouped and engaged the police in running battles that led to a number of injuries.

Tension is high in Bura, Tana River County, after police shot and killed a National Youth Service officer on Saturday night.

Residents say the battle between the NYS servicemen and the police began in a bar on Thursday.

The NYS officers allegedly beat up and injured a police officer who was later rushed Malindi Hospital for treatment.

Police arrested one of the attackers and locked him up and this did not go well with the NYS servicemen who regrouped attempted to forcefully set their colleague free. This later led to violent confrontation between the police and the NYS officers that lasted more than eight hours.

After the killing of their colleague, the NYS servicemen engaged the police in running battles that led to a number of injuries.

REINFORCEMENT

Sources told the Nation that police reinforcement had to be sought from Tana Delta, Galole and Bura sub counties to restore order. 

"We suddenly heard gun shots, so we had to flee, we thought we had been attacked by al Shabaab," Lucy Buya, a resident of Bura town said. 

Senior security officials are yet to comment on Saturday night's clashes. However, Coast Regional Police Commandant Noah Mwivanda said he would issue a statement on the matter later.
