Hotels in Mt Kenya region get four-star rating

  • Sportsman Arms Hotel in Laikipia, Green Hills Hotel and Outspan Hotel, both in Nyeri, were all given the three-star classification.
  • In the lodges category, Aberdares Country Club was given a four-star recognition.
  • Eighteen hotels in the region were rated in the latest classification dated July 22, 2016 and gazetted on August 5, 2016.
  • Ikweta Safari Camp emerged the best hotel in Meru County with a three-star rating in the tented camp category.

Five hotels in the Mount Kenya region have received a rating of four stars and above in the latest hotel classification by the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA).

The White Rhino Hotel in Nyeri Town and Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki were rated as the best town hotels, each receiving a four-star classification.

The region stood out with the most decorated town hotels in the country with five hotels being rated above three stars.

Sportsman Arms Hotel in Laikipia, Green Hills Hotel and Outspan Hotel, both in Nyeri, were all given the three-star classification.

With a capacity of 11 rooms and 20 beds, Segera Retreat Lodge was ranked as the most luxurious lodge in the country, receiving the much-coveted five-star rating.

In the lodges category, Aberdares Country Club was given a four-star recognition. It has a total bed capacity of 94.

THREE-STAR LODGES

In the same category, Giraffe Ark Camp Lodge, Serena Mountain Lodge, both in Nyeri County, and Borana Lodge in Laikipia County were classified as three-star lodges.

Sweetwaters Serena Camp and Ol Pejeta House in Nanyuki stood out as the best tented camps countrywide, with a four-star rating.

Ikweta Safari Camp emerged the best hotel in Meru County with a three-star rating in the tented camp category.

Eight hotels in Nyeri County with a total room capacity of 544 and bed capacity of 1,071, were rated, with three of them getting a four-star classification.

White Rhino Hotel manager Phillip Mbugua said the recent rating is expected to open up the region to the international tourism market that has been elusive to hoteliers in the region.

“This is a major boost for us because we have been dealing with the domestic market and the rating will open up hotels to the top markets,” said Mr Mbugua.
