We’ll block bid to impeach Nairobi Speaker, Elachi’s allies pledge

MCAs allied to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi have vowed to block an impending censure motion against her.
This comes even as the ward reps lashed out at Governor Mike Sonko, accusing him of instigating the chaos witnessed at the city assembly on Tuesday.
They vowed to push on with their support for the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).
Mr Jeremiah Karani (Kayole Central) said they will block any impeachment motion against Ms Elachi.
He dismissed as frivolous the grounds put forward for her planned removal from office, saying “Ms Elachi is here to stay”.
“We are 75 MCAs who support Ms Elachi, leave alone those who claim to have collected 59 signatures to impeach her. She is going nowhere. She was impeached and reinstated by the courts and also obtained an order prohibiting her second ouster,” said Mr Karani.
IMPEACHMENT MOTION
The push for the ouster of Ms Elachi has gathered momentum, with 59 MCAs signing the impeachment motion, way above the 42 signatures needed.
The Speaker is facing accusations of abuse of office, illegal appointment of a new assembly clerk, corruption, poor leadership, victimisation of MCAs and assembly staff, impunity, disregard for the law and county orders, and ‘militarisation’ of the assembly.
The reps denied accusations that they had been paid to launch a spirited onslaught against Governor Sonko, saying they are supporting the NMS because its work in the capital is already being felt by Nairobians.
DEED OF TRANSFER
Nominated rep June Ndegwa faulted the city boss for demanding the termination of the Deed of Transfer of functions between the county and the national government yet he signed it willingly.
“If it is one person who is making us fight, then we will get rid of him. He (Sonko) is responsible for bringing goons to the assembly,” said Ms Ndegwa.
Mr Karani said the sudden about-turn on the part of the governor stems from fear that he will be seen as a failure in comparison to the commendable work the Major General Mohammed Badi-led office has done in the county.
