Hundreds of traders and people working at slaughterhouses in Kiamaiko face an uncertain future after the Nairobi County Assembly demanded that they leave.

Previous attempts by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) to have the abattoir moved failed.

Ward representatives said the slaughterhouses, famed for goat meat, should have closed after being declared a health hazard years ago.

Dandora Area Three Ward Representative Charles Thuo raised fears of a disease outbreak, saying, the population around the abattoirs continues to grow rapidly.

Relocation

Through a statement, Mr Thuo said the traders should have moved to Njiru where there are more convenient slaughterhouses.

“The relocation is being derailed by the owners of slaughterhouses who fear losing business,” Mr Thuo said.

In December 2018, Nema gave the Kiamaiko goat traders a year to move.

This was after the agency issued a closure order for slaughterhouses in the area in April of the same year.
