Driver dies, students injured as bus rolls in Murang'a

The driver of a bus carrying students died Tuesday while five learners were seriously injured when the vehicle rolled along the Gakungu-Kirimiri road in Murang'a South Sub-County.

At least 20 other students escaped with minor injuries in the mid-morning incident.

Murang'a South Sub-County police boss Alexander Shikondi said the driver was reported to have lost control of the vehicle as he steered it round a sharp bend.

"The Neo Kenya sacco-managed bus was ferrying students from Gititu Mixed Secondary School after the institution was closed for holidays. The driver lost control and the bus overturned and landed into a ditch," he said.

Mr Shikondi said the driver died on the spot and rescuers took the injured students to various nearby hospitals.

Treated and discharged

A report indicated that Makuyu Sub-County Hospital received six students who were treated and discharged.

Kenol Hospital received an equal number who were treated and discharged but one was admitted with a fracture on his left hand.

Two girls were referred to Thika Level 5 Hospital with serious injuries while eight were treated at Murang’a Level 5 Hospital and discharged, with one being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital.

The Vehicle was towed to Makuyu Police Station as investigations commenced.

Mr Shikondi urged motorists to be vigilant on the roads, especially during the Christmas festive season.

He warned that acts of recklessness will be severely punished in accordance with the law.
