What you need to know:

  • Kenya Power is expected to light up the town, which would improve security and allow for more working hours.
  • Devolution CS Anne Waiguru is expected to kick-start the National Youth Service programme in Likoni and other areas.
  • Some 1,300 youth in the town will be hired to clean it, open up drainage systems and build police posts and health clinics.
  • The youth service projects are running in 64 constituencies so far and have employed more than 70,000 young people.

The Mombasa Old Town fish market will be renovated and equipped with cold storage.

Its seafront will be redesigned to have a walkway and a park to attract tourists.

Further, Kenya Power is expected to light up the town, which would improve security and allow for more working hours.

These are some of the projects President Uhuru Kenyatta announced as he concluded his tour of the coastal town.

He has been in Mombasa for six days.

In a statement, Mr Kenyatta said the projects were part of the government’s drive to improve Mombasa Town’s economy, create jobs and stem violence and youth radicalisation.

BUY FISHING BOATS

“The government will buy fishing boats to be given to youth groups and cold storage made available at the old port.

“The government is not interested in making profit; our aim is to create opportunities for families to have sources of livelihood.

“The MacKinnon Market will also be modernised and as the project continues, traders currently housed there will not be displaced but should allow for completion of the upgrade within three months,” the President said.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru is expected to kick-start the National Youth Service programme in Likoni and other areas this week, following its launch in Kisauni and the old town.

Some 1,300 youth in the town will be hired to clean it, open up drainage systems and build police posts and health clinics.

According to CS Waiguru, the youth service projects are running in 64 constituencies so far and have employed more than 70,000 young people.

Those hired have now saved Sh500 million, she said.
