A secondary school student was on Tuesday killed after a vehicle veered off the road and hit her before it rammed into a tree in Gatauga Village, near Kariene market, along the Meru-Nkubu road.

Another student was slightly injured in the accident.

Ms Fiona Karwitha was walking towards Kariene market when a Peugeot 504 pick-up hit her at a sharp corner. She was together with her friend, Joyce Njuki.

The vehicle, driven by George Gatobu, was heading towards Nkubu from Meru. It hit and uprooted a tree before coming to a stop at the edge of a steep hill.

The girls, aged 16, were returning home when the accident happened.

Imenti Central police boss John Tarus said Karwitha died while being rushed to Consolata Hospital, Nkubu, while Joyce was treated and discharged.

He said Mr Gatobu and his passenger sustained slight injuries and the driver fled from the scene.

Two weeks ago, boda-boda riders and the business community in Central Imenti held prayers following a spate of accidents along the road.

They said that at least four riders had lost their lives in the past one month while others were injured.
