Meet the MPs of Kisii county

Kisii County has seven constituencies and two more are to be created come next year’s elections. It is also a county with two ministers in the Cabinet, thanks to the coalition government.

Prof Sam Ongeri … Kanu MP for Nyaribari Masaba and the Minister for Education is a long-serving legislator who has been in and out of Parliament in the last two decades.

A doctor, he is the senior-most politician in the county who has also seen duty as an ambassador to UNEP in Nairobi.

He is one of the four Party of National Unity representatives President Kibaki picked to negotiate with Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM under former UN secretary general Kofi Annan that led to the formation of the coalition.

Richard Onyonka … the PDP MP for Kitutu Chache, is assistant minister for Foreign Affairs and is a first term MP, known for his openness with the Press.

His father, the late Dr Zachary Onyonka, was an MP in 1969 at the age of only 29 and went on to become a minister.

Politics in Kisii have been dominated by his family and that of former Minister Simeon Nyachae.

Chris Obure … ODM MP for Bobasi, is the Minister for Works and he too has been in and out of Parliament for the last two decades.
He has served in the plum jobs of Minister for Finance, and Foreign Affairs but is also remembered as a footballer who played as a striker for Gor Mahia.

Simon Ogari … ODM member for Bomachoge, is assistant Minister for Transport and another first term MP.

An engineer, he ran a consultancy firm before going to Parliament.

Robert Monda … Narc MP for Nyaribari Chache endeared himself to voters when he was a provincial veterinary officer who helped to treat farmers’ animals. He is serving his first term in Parliament.

Manson Nyamweya … the Ford-P MP for South Mugirango, is a first term MP and a well-known entrepreneur whose businesses are in Kisii, Nairobi and Mombasa.  He won the seat in a by-election after the election of Omingo Magara was nullified by a petition court.

Charles Onyancha … the Orange Democratic Movement MP for Bonchari, is serving his first term in Parliament.

A former chief executive of Cooper Kenya, he is a well known businessman in Kisii.

George Nyamweya … is a Party of National Unity first-term nominated MP who is a lawyer.
