A grandson of former Defence minister Njenga Karume, who is accused of throwing his girlfriend to her death from the fourth floor of an apartment block on Thursday last week, will be detained for another 10 days.

A Kiambu court gave this verdict Tuesday after the police made an application to continue holding Mr Kenneth Karume, 30, at the Kiambu station to facilitate further investigations in a case in which he is accused of killing Ms Victoria Wairimu on the eve of the Easter holidays.

In a sworn affidavit, Constable Kiongo Karima had asked Kiambu Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku to extend the accused’s detention by 14 days but the defence objected to this.

The suspect is said to have pushed Ms Wairimu, a mother of a four-year-old boy, from a balcony at the Gracia Apartment in Kiambu Town, resulting to her death.

SHOUTED FOR HELP

According to witnesses, there was commotion in the victim’s house.

They said she shouted for help before she went silent.

Afterwards, there was commotion outside as neighbours rushed down.

They found the body of a woman lying outside the compound of the apartment.

Mr Stephen Kibunja, the lawyer representing Mr Karume, argued that two weeks was too much considering that the accused had been in custody for four days.

He asked the court to grant the prosecution seven days only.
