The bodies of two brothers who drowned when a boat capsized in Tana River in Embu County have been recovered.

One of the bodies was found on Wednesday while the second was recovered on Thursday during a joint operation by the police and the locals.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Embu Referral Hospital Mortuary.

The victim’s relative, Mr Cyrus Ndhinwa said he learnt of their deaths with great shock.

“I almost collapsed when I learnt what happened," he said.

The two were returning home on Wednesday from the neighbouring Kitui region when their boat overturned near Karura village after it was hit by strong water currents.

Rescue efforts

They were swept downstream and efforts to save their lives were unsuccessful.

Witnesses said they saw the brothers crossing the river before tragedy struck.

"We acted fast when the brothers were thrown out into the waters from the boat, but we were unable to rescue them, “one witness said.

Area MCA Lenny Masters Mwaniki said it was unfortunate that two members of the same family had lost their lives.

He advised residents to keep away from rivers whose banks have burst following heavy downpour.

"Residents should not even go close the rivers during this rainy season to avoid such fatal incidences," he said.
