KQ launches carbon offsetting programme

Kenya Airways has launched a voluntary carbon offsetting programme, to enable its passengers contribute towards reducing its emission.

The initiative, the airline indicated, will see it raise funds towards Olkaria III phase 2 geothermal expansion project.

The project is located at Hells Gate National park in Naivasha and is being handled by Orpower 4.

The airline’s managing director, Mr Titus Naikuni, said the programme is based on a carbon calculator tool built into the airline’s online ticket booking process.

“It will be possible for our passengers to pay an additional amount in respect of carbon emission related to the flight they are taking,” said Mr Naikuni during the launch at a Nairobi hotel.

The programme has been developed together with the International Air Transport Association.

This makes the airline the first among its peers in Africa to incorporate it on its systems.

Other airlines in the region like Egypt Air and Mozambique Air are at various stages of development, while talks are ongoing between IATA and South African Airways for the same.
