The bidding for a tender to rehabilitate Kakamega Airstrip has kicked off.

Contractors keen on taking up the job visited the facility on Thursday before proceeding to prepare and submit quotations for evaluation by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

The repairs are targeting to improve the condition of the 1.1 kilometre runaway at the for safe landing after a local airliner, Fly 540 introduced flights to Kakamega from Nairobi in May this year.

The repairs will include improving the condition of the apron and the terminal building at the airstrip.

There are also plans to set up arrival and departure lounges for passengers using the facility.

The patched run way has raised safety concerns over the use of the facility for passenger flights.

The expansion of the airstrip is expected in the next phase of the project and will involve relocation of families leaving in the neighbourhood of the facility.

Actual rehabilitation will take place after the authority’s board awards the contract.
