What you need to know:

  • Gen (rtd) Mulinge was the symbol of stability in some of the most critical time of Kenya’s history
  • Just like in life, Gen Mulinge proved to be a unifying figure even in death

Kenya on Saturday bid farewell to one of its bravest sons, who for decades dedicated his life to the service of the country. Retired General Jackson Mulinge was a soldier to the end, battling the ravages of old age and illness with admirable dignity and resilience.

His story as a diligent military officer, who rose through the ranks from a lowly colonial era recruit to a senior officer that served two post-independence presidents, should be an inspiration to all.

Gen (rtd) Mulinge was the symbol of stability in some of the most critical time of Kenya’s history, effectively standing on the right side of the law whenever there were coup attempts. He recognised that democracy, despite its flaws, was the best system for the country even though he had the barrel of the gun at his disposal.

It is even more incredible that he never followed the footsteps of soldiers elsewhere in Africa who from the 1960s destabilised the continent by overthrowing democratically elected leaders.

For decades he was the face of the Kenyan military, laying the foundation for an institution that has gained global respect. His character was later transferred to politics and community service where he was a voice of hope and reason.

Just like in life, Gen Mulinge proved to be a unifying figure even in death, bringing together political protagonists to mourn him. This is important at a time when the country seems to have more divisive rather than cohesive elements.

The fallen general’s efforts must not be in vain. Only by embracing true patriotism will Kenyans honour the memory of this brave soldier.
